Super Hero Life. =)

The WasatchGirl was once picked up by a SLC blog listing, not Connect Blogs (which I know syndicates my blog.. thanks Jordy) but another one I did not know. The site included a description of me that was along the lines of how I blogged on business, technology and venture capital and then on the weekends transformed from a conservative business woman to a climber. He he he… the description completely cracked me up as I would never describe myself as conservative (for the past two years have worn a nose piercing, even to work as ok’d by my employer) and I loved how it made me sound like some type of super hero that transformed between different identities.

I bring up this story because on occasion I like to post an entry to let new readers know that I do run two distinctly different blogs. The Wasatch Girl is where I track thoughts on tech and venture capital. The other half of my life consists of climbing, running, traveling, etc and is tracked on a site named after my little dog at www.cragbaby.com.

Many people these days are hyper-sensitive about labels. I would think that a business analyst would spend their day balancing conservative and liberal impulses. Failure to assess risk guarantees a business failure, while obsession with risks causes people to miss opportunities.

Climbers are the same. The good climbers I know spend most of the climbing time laying in protection and carefully analyzing the route. The actual act of climbing is way out there, but getting good involves a mindset that can identify and prepare for the risks.

There is a duality in the statement: “The climber approached the 5.11 route conservatively.”

I reject the notion that there is a foundational conflict between conservativism and progress, because a conservative assessment often allows a climber or business analyst to progress to a higher level. The ideas are complementary.

If you don’t mind, I will change the link back to the super hero tag. IMHO, Super hero references makes my blog list more compelling.

    Kevin,
Ah, thanks for the info. My google alerts picked it up once and then I could never find the listing again. I thought it referenced me as conservative, but mild manner is lovely as well. I really can be mild mannered with my nose ring in… I swear. =)

I appreciate you listing my blog and will check out the site now that I have the link again.
    Thank you for commenting.

If you are talking about SLSites.com, the description says “This is the blog for mild mannered analyst Rachel Strate who, on the weekends, becomes Wasatch Girl.” It does not use the word “conservative,” but does make a reference to the superhero status of a person who combines interests in business and climbing. If you want the listing removed or the description changed, you can use the contact screen.
